Synopsis Readings in Crime and Criminology, in four volumes is an attempt to bring together selected and useful materials in the forms of articles, papers, documents and extracts to provide the student, researcher and professional in crime studies and criminology a strategic window onto the vast landscape the subject commands. The treatment is under four thoughtful heads, namely, Sociology of Crime and Criminality, Dimensions of Crime in India, Dynamics of Crime Prevention and Criminology, and Policy and Planning in Criminology. Together, these collections deal with a vast range of subjects, including historical perspectives in crime and criminality, crime and social environment, state and the anti-social individual, science and science practice in criminology, law and basic rationale, crime and criminal behaviour, economic offences and approaches to their curtailment, urban crime profile, police and police system reform, crime prevention and realities, criminal psychology and fear of crime, criminology and rehabilitation, and factors in the causation of crime and criminal behaviour. Of special interest are the appendices dealing with perceptions of crime in medieval and colonial India, and also the most recent papers on many aspects of crime in India, including heinous offences such as child rape and kidnapping as well as white collar crime such as the stock scam and drug abuse. In putting together such diverse materials, the focus, nonetheless, has not been blurred: to provide a lucid and cogent picture of the vital aspects of crime and criminology in wide-angle perspective.
