Synopsis Any person who buys goods or services on payment of money for a consideration is a consumer, but a person who purchases goods for resale or for any commercial purpose is not a consumer. He is the one who suffers from various unfair trade practices such as adultered and substandard goods, short weights and measures, wrong description in advertising, higher prices, black marketing, hoarding and the like. He therefore should be protected from such unfair trade practices. These can be curtailed through various measures of the government and other non-government organisations. In the present study an attempt has been made to bring to light the various consumer protection measures in India. The book covers the awareness and attitude of rural and urban consumers, the legal measures taken by the government for consumer protection, the role of voluntary consumer organisations, the profile and perception of beneficiaries in relation to the decisions made by the district consumer disputes redressal forums and judicial decisions on consumer's cases.
