About the authors

S.P. Gupta

Dr. S.P. Gupta, born in 1931, presently Chairman, Indian Archaeological Society, New Delhi, is a distinguished archaeologist and art historian who has been awarded several gold medals and the Sir Mortimer Wheeler Prize for excellence in field-archaeology. He has worked and lectured in more than 30 countries of the world. He has authored a number of books including Disposal of the Dead and Physical Types in Ancient India (1971), Tourism, Museums and Monuments (1975), Archaeology of Soviet Central Asia and the Indian Borderlands - two volumes (1978), The Roots of Indian Art (1980) - the French edition of which was published in 1990 and Cultural Tourism in India (2002). He has also edited many books and published about 50 articles in various national and international journals and books.

Krishna Lal

Ms. Krishna Lal (M.A. History from Aligarh University) served in the Department of Decorative Arts and Textiles for 34 years in the National Museum, New Delhi. Ms. Lal has participated in several seminars and international conferences held in U.K., Mexico and Greece and presented papers there. In addition to co-ordinating several national and international exhibitions, she was an active participant in the Festival of India Exhibitions in U.K., France and the U.S.S.R. during 1982-88.

Her publications include a catalogue on Bidriware in the National Museum Collection, New Delhi (1990); two catalogues on Indian Decorative Arts, published in German (1985), and in Russian (1987); Tourism, Museums and Monuments in India (1974, co-author); Cultural Tourism in India (2003, co-author) and Peacock in Indian Art, Thought and Literature (2006).

Mahua Bhattacharyya

Mrs. Mahua Bhattacharyya, M.A. in archaeology, is at present associated with the Indian Archaeological Society to create awareness about the country's cultural heritage through the Society's educational activities. She is currently also engaged in a doctoral thesis on pilgrimage tourism in India. She has, to her credit, a diploma in Mass Communications as well.
