Synopsis Foundations of Indian culture is an outline study of the various aspects of Indian culture comprising religion, philosophy, science, arts, literature and society. It comprehensively brings out that one idea prominently runs through all the modes of thought and social outlook and that is the idea of oneness. The history of India is, in fact, a continuous attempt to make this vision a reality in the life of every individual—man, woman and child. The endearing quest for the realisation of this goal has afforded Indian culture a continuity, universality, spirituality and humanity which has also rendered it unassailable and beyond the reach of the ravages of time. The idea of oneness indeed provides India its most needed unity in diversity and the sense of national integration. The treatment of such a vast subject within a short space has been fairly difficult and at times it may appear as if clarity has been sacrificed for the sake of brevity. The enlightened reader shall, however, appreciate the author's limitations as the purpose of the book has been to identify the basic current that runs like a golden twine through the entire fabric of Indian life and not to present an exhaustive and cohesive account of all the aspects of Indian culture in a chronological order. Our purpose shall stand fully realized if the study enthuses in the reader a new vigour to study the Indian culture in a more systematic and comprehensive manner. We are sure that the readers will find the book profitable in their above endeavour. We also trust that the students and teachers of history and sociology, besides all others interested in knowing the glorious past of India, will surely find the book illuminating and interesting.
