The present book is an attempt to analyse Indian Politics in the light of its social and religious fabric in terms of Caste, Tribe and Religion with latest facts, figures and analysis. These three social segments are playing important roles in the formulation of developmental policies and setting goals for decision makers. This book is an attempt to unfold these under currents of Indian polity and society. The trinity of the goals of the Constitution of India-socialism, secularism and democracy-is facing stiff challenges from the new formulated policies of liberalization, globalisation and privatization, The communal and casteist policies practiced by the different governments in the center and a few state governments in the last fifteen years have challenged the social harmony and secularism in India. These are the important questions in the 21st century and the present book attempts to throw light on them. It provides comprehensive reading material and thought provoking analysis and it may initiate popular and academic discussion on the role of caste, tribe and religion in Indian politics.

Dr. S.N. Singh (b. 1941) formerly Professor in the Department of Public Administration, Lucknow University, is the Secretary of the Institute for Applied Research and Development, a non-governmental organization based at Lucknow. From 1980 to 1984 Dr. Singh was with L.B.S. National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie as Reader in Public Administration on deputation. His academic career covers a span of about four decades in which he has to his credit eight books already published. Two under publication on various important themes of social relevance. He has published more than 40 papers in the reputed journals. His experience of teaching, research and training for long years has enabled him to produce works which have been widely acclaimed. As Secretary of the IARD since 1995 he has been engaged in academic as well as social service activities. Under the banner of the Institute several activities have been organized since its inception.
