About the artist

Bhimsen Joshi

Bhimsen Joshi in this merges the well-known ragas Hindol and Lalita, hence the name Hindolita. The Hindol, one might feel, dominates. But a more careful listening makes one realize that the presence of Lalit is equally strong, if not stronger. Hindol dominates the structure, the raga-rupa, but the ethos, the raga-bhava is premeated by Lalit. The presence of Hindol is more noticeable in the aroha or ascent. In avaroha (descent), at the middle and crucial point where the Uttaranga, the upper part of the scale and the body of the raga, meets the purvanga, the lower part, Lalita takes over and does so with a single, delicate but sure touch.
