Overview for Role of Media on Terrorism: Its Impact on Society

It appears that terrorists use the media for their own purpose but media too, profit from terrorism as well. Both seem to feed on each other. Therefore, to understand the impact on society of media coverage of terrorism, one needs to answer three critical questions. First, to which extent media and terrorism are related, second, what are the effects of this relationship and third, what is or can be done to reduce its negative effects. This book aims to answer these questions, first, by discussing the reasons for terrorists to use the media as well as their methods. Subsequently, the reasons and methods of the media reporting on terrorist attacks are analyzed. Finally, new media technologies such as the Internet is discussed which give direct access to terrorists to propagate their message without any interference of the journalists.

Further, the effect of media coverage of terrorism is analyzed at two levels, first, at the public level and second, at the level of the government. Similarly, the policy options to minimize the negative effects of the media coverage are also analyzed at the government level and also at the level of self-restraint. However much desirable it may seem, yet the moot question still remains; are such measures useful and likely to succeed, given the structure of the media world today. This book covers all the aspects of Role of Media on Terrorism and its impact on society.
