Synopsis Emancipation of women is an essential prerequisite for economic development and social progress of a nation. The Self Help Groups empower women and train them to take active part in the socio-economic progress of the nation. Self Help Groups are now gaining acceptance as an alternative system for credit delivery for meeting the credit needs especially to women. Self Help Group is the brain child of Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, which was founded by Prof. Mohammed Yunus of Chittangong University in the year 1975. This was exclusively established for the poor. The concept of SGH underlines the principle, "for the women, by the women and of the women". In recent years the SHG is greatly successful in providing self employment. SHGs maintain a track record of sound credit management based on their own savings and strengthening the capacity of support agencies, such as state level women's development corporations, non-governmental organizations, banks and so on.
