Synopsis Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are very harmful pests for agricultural, horticultural and forest plants. They suck the cell sap and affect photosynthesis and yield of crops. They also act as vector for several viral diseases of crops. Hence, their control on crops is must. The book contains five chapters. The chapter first is devoted for general introduction of aphids and review of literature. The chapter second deals with biology of aphids which enlights life cycle pattern, fecundity and reproduction in aphids. Third chapter deals with 30 existing species of pest aphids causing damage to crops cereals, pulses, oil seeds, fibers, sugarcane, vegetables, ornamental plants, horticulture and forest under which a detail information is given on distribution, taxonomy (identification), life cycle, nature of damage, host plants, and control measures. In control measures, more emphasis is given on ecofriendly control measure. The chapter four is devoted for 20 new species of pest aphids found on above mentioned crops and cover all aspects given under third chapter. Newly described species refers to Aphis acasae, Melanaphis valgari, Toxoptera ambi, Rhopalosiphum cashivi, R. kolhapurensis, Acyrthosiphon calatropi, A. vatani, Bravicornye capsici, Pentalonia keli, Indomyzus glaricae, Myzus ajari, M. terminalae, Macrosiphum koyenensis, Neomyzus koyani, Ceratovacuna bambusa, Greenidea Greenidea fhanasae, G.G bhimashankari, Eutrichosiphum paratrichosiphum pisidiumi, E.N. radhanagari, etc.  This book is enriched with a rich bibliography, large number of illustrations and an exhaustive index for easier reference hunting. The unique book contains both, basic and applied aspects of pest aphids and extremely useful for protecting various crops from aphids.

Dr. Sathe Tukaram Vithalrao [M.Sc., Ph.D., Sangit Visharad, IBT (Seri.), F.S.E.Sc., F.I.S.E.C.], Professor in Entomology, Department of Zoology, Department of Zoology, Shivaji University, Kolhapur has teaching experience of 22 years in entomology.  He is contributory teacher for M.Sc. courses in Department of Agrochemicals, Pest Management and Sericulture.  He has published 165 research papers and 22 books viz., Preet Patangachi (drama, 1981), Crop Protection from Insects (Marathi), Sericultural Cropo Protection (1998), Biological Pest Control (2000), Cotton Pests and Biocontrol Agents (2001), Insects Pest Predators (2001), Sericulture and Pest Management (2001), Agrochemicals and Pest Management (2003), Insect Predators and Pest Management (2003), Vermiculture and Organic Farming (2004), Basic Entomology (2005), Fundamentals of Beekeeping (2006), Forest Entomology: A Textbook (2008), etc.  He guided 15 Ph.D. students, completed 4 major research projects (from CSIR, UST, UGC).  He visited Canada (1988), Japan (1988), Thailand (2002, 2004), Spain (2005), France (2005), South Korea (2006), Nepal (2007) for academic work.  He is member of editorial board of several journals in India and involved in T.V. programming of butterflies and moths.  He has published several popular articles in daily newspapers and delivered talks through All India Radio.  He got several prestigious awards "Environmentalists of the Year-2003", "Bharat Jyoti Award-2006", "Jewel of India Award-2006", "Lifetime Education Achievement Award-2006", "Lifetime Achievement Award-2007", "International Gold Star Award-2007", "Eminent Citizen of India Award-2007" etc.  He also got fellowships from several scientific societies.

B.V. Jadhav

Dr. Bapurao V jadhav (M.Sc., Ph.D.) is Lecturer and Head, Dept. of Zoology, Balasaheb Desai College, Patan, Dist. Satara.  He has teaching and research experience of 15 years.  He has published four research papers on aphids and presented 15 papers in various conferences.  He visited South Korea in 2006 for presentation of research papers on sericulture.  He worked for U.G.C. Research Project on "Biology of Ichthyophis" and is life member of NESA, New Delhi and associated with many local NGOs.
