Overview for Care of the Unborn Child with Yoga: A Handbook of Theory, Practice and Application of Yoga

The book provides useful guidelines for pregnant women who wish to have an easy delivery by practicing yoga.  Here is a complete description of asanas, regulated breathing (Pranayama) and relaxation and meditation techniques profusely illustrated, which they can do throughout pregnancy from conception to delivery.  It also gives information about the physiological and hormonal changes that take place in the mother.  There are some interesting Puranic stories also, proving the benefits of good environment of the unborn.  It contains conclusion of scientific research study on "Efficacy of Integrated Approach of Yoga on Outcome of Pregnancy."  This has proved beyond doubt the benefits and safety of yoga in pregnancy minimizing complications like Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), Preterm labour (PTL), Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), etc. and also cesarean sections.  The key message here is that yoga can be practised safely by pregnant women.  She had to face lot of opposition from obstetricians and practising doctors who were apprehensive about learning yoga practices during pregnancy.  The technique and practice of yoga in pregnancy had not been explored from the scientific and medical point of view.  The aim of asanas is to train the mind and body for spiritual perfection and not as mere physical exercises.  The book teaches simple asanas giving more emphasis on pranayama and relaxation techniques.
