The present work captioned as Sociological Philosophy of Education, among several books, published in India, claims to be the most comprehensive. This lays down the basic concepts of sociological foundations of education as required to be understood by every specialist of the subject. Part one of this book lays down the fundamentals of education required to be understood by every scholar and student of the subject alike. It includes basic aspects of education; educational values; educational aims, functions and priorities; institutions and agencies of education; distinction between training, instructions and teaching and education as well as curriculum of education. Part two of this book deals with sociological foundations of education, which discusses various aspects of the subject in 27 chapters. The emphasis has been laid on the nature of educational sociology, education and society, education in Indian social context, social mobility, child's socialisation, social change, social control, culture and place of family, community, social values, modernisation as well as religious and moral values in education. Due emphasis has been laid on national policy on education'science education, vocational and technological education as well as role of mass-media in education and concepts of freedom, discipline and responsibility in education in social context. Due to some defects in the educational system, in almost all the nations of the world, some intellectuals advocate for a deschooled society which is a unwanted, anti-social and anti-educational concept, therefore, we have included one chapter on this aspect as well but to counter this concept we have included another chapter, in this book, the thoughts of Karl Mannheim on the future of sociology of education'the concept, to the best of my knowledge, is not found in any Indian book on the subject. Thus, this book is unique.
