Sounds Of Kutch
Located on the western most tip of India, in the state of Gujarat, Kutch is an isolated island which showcases its diversity just like its culture. The tirbes which came to Kutch from Sindh, Pakistan, Persia, Africa, Central Asia and Europe brought its own music which over the years have given a unique identity to Kutch.
Many of the folk instruments are very simple like Surando, Jodia Pava, Morchang, Santaar, Ramsagar, Nagada, Dakla, Ghado-Ghamelo, Manjeera, Jhanj etc but the constant use for generations has refined the music to such an extent that it has become extremely complex with vast depth. Even the style in which it is played, makes it unique to Kutch. Majority of the artists who have played instruments in this album are engaged in professions like cattle herding, farming, black smity, truck driving, daily wage labour, manufacturing of handicraft, auto rickshaw driving etc. for their livelihood.
