Synopsis

Sri Tyagaraja, a prolific composer of songs in praise of Lord Rama, together with his contemporaries Muthuswamy Dikshitar and /shyama Sastri, makes up the trinity of Carnatic music. Born on May 4th, 1767 at Thiruvarur as the son of Ramabrahman and Seethamma, Tyagaraja was initiated into worship of Lord Rama at a young age. 'Namo Namo Raghavaya' was the first song composed by Tyagaraja on Lord Rama. Steeped in devotion to the Lord. Tyagaraja went about singing His glory in sheer ecstasy, with the outpouring overwhelming in its element of 'bhakti' and imbuing one with spirituality. He exerted tremendous influence on south Indian music, and, his compositions numbering about 700 play a pivotal role in most of the concerts of Carnatic music. Tha 'Nadopassana' practised by Tyagaraja was so intense that it evoked divine response by way of the Lord's manifestation. Salvation through the musical path is best illustrated by the life of the 'Tyagaraja Aradhana' held annually at Thiruvaiyaru.
