Sangita kalanidhi' is a prestigious title conferred upon an outstanding musician or a musicologist, annually, by the Music Academy, Chennai, the permier orgnization devoted to the cause of music. Perceived as the utimate in recognition of musical excellence, the title of Sangita Kalanidhi' , with its sine qua non of 'vidwat' or scholaship, mark s the culmination of the musical evolution of an artiste. Sublim , rather than, scintillating music flows from the 'Sangita kalanidhi' its experience more aesthetic than aural. Not surprising then that every Carnatic musician / musicologist nurtures the aspiration to being crowned with such a glory. The award of the title is not necessarily confined to vocalists as there are many instrumentallists who have been honoured with the title. Percussion too has merited the award alongside instrumental music. Female artistes have also been bestowed with the award though their number is small.
