Wedding Bells: Chittibabu
Chitti Babu exploded the Carnatic Music scene with a refreshingly different concept of tonality and melody on the veena. The veena, like the Been in Hindustani music, has been considered the most appropriate instrument for correct execution of sedate gamaka - laden phrase - Considered the kernel of scholasticism. The Vainika style of Carnatic music like the been-ang of the North is celebrated as music for the musician. To this instrument, Chitti Babu gave a completely new flavour - fetching, liting, coquettish and delicate, yet with personality. The approach germinated of course with his gure, E.Mani Sankara Shastri, but it was Chitti Babu who established this approach on teh platform in totality as a new dimensiion. The concert style of Chitti Babu reveals a high degree of sensitivity to audience tastes-not only audiences initiated into the rigours of Carnatic grammer but also listeners coming in with exposures to other forms of music. This is seen in his selection and treatment of songs and his alapanas and swaras, but most off ass, in his ability to exploit the unique timbral features offered by the electronically amplified Veena.
