Dr. Prabha Atre

Dr. Prabha Atre has authored various academic books on the multiple facets of music that are especially relevant for current day music trends and performances. Her first book ‘Swaramayee’, a compilation of her numerous articles on music that bagged the Maharashtra State Government Award in 1989 is a classic example of her original yet analytical thinking. Her second book ‘Swaralee’ published in 1992 also received numerous accolades. Madhya Pradesh Government Hindi Granth Academy has published Hindi translation of her books ‘Swaramayee’ and ‘Swaralee’ with a view of sharing the knowledge contained in her books with Hindi knowing music lovers. Her third book ‘Swaranginee’ published in 1994 carried 200 of her popular compositions in Classical and light Classical music. The albums of these compositions will be available in the market very soon. A book in English - ‘Enlightening the listener - Contemporary North Indian Classical Vocal music performance’ (accompanied with a cassette) has achieved the objective in enabling the global music lovers to understand and appreciate Indian music. A book of poems in Marathi titled - ‘Antaswar’ by Dr. Atre brings out another unique aspect of her creative personality.

Dr. Prabha Atre was trained in the traditional ‘guru-shishya parampara’ by the two doyens of the Kirana Gharana - the late Sureshbabu Mane and his famous sister Padmabhushan Hirabai Badodekar. She also drew much inspiration from the styles of the renowned maestros, Amir Khan and Bade Gulam Ali Khan. Today, she is herself an acclaimed guru both in performance and research. Quite a few of her students are already well known stage and mass media performers. Her P.H.D. students have had the advantage of testing their work in the context of contemporary performances. Additionally, she has been teaching at foreign universities as a visiting professor. Her public concerts, Radio and TV programs and lecture - demonstrations in India and abroad to audiences of varying tastes have always been highly appreciated. She was honoured with the National Award - ‘PADMASHREE’ in 1990 and the ‘SANGEET NATAK ACADEMY’ award in 1991 as the Indian Government’s appreciation for her outstanding role in enriching, preserving and popularizing the Indian Music.
