Synopsis Contemporary architecture not only in India but also around the world is indebted to Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, the Swiss-French architects, Le Corbusier has left an indelible mark on the architectural and intellectual landscapes of the twentieth century. This book is pioneering attempt to cover the entire Indian works of these two architects. Besides Chandigarh, it covers Le Corbusier's works at Ahmedabad and also the Bhakra Dam at Nangal. It also discusses Pierre Jeannerer's lesser known projects like Talwara in Punjab; Sundernagar, Pandoh and Slapper townships in Himachal Pradesh; and the Medical College at Rohtak in Haryana. It analyzes even those projects of both the architects which never saw the light of the day. It examines the full and extraordinary range of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeannerer's ideas which encompass contemporary town planning, innovative use of space, and modulor standardization. With a rich, explanatory and penetrating text, this treatise is a retrospection of creative aspects, as well as, limitations of their works on the eve of the their millennium. This is the most serious appraisal of how these architects overcame all the professional problems and found solutions within the Indian context. Throughout the book, the authors discuss the architectural works of the masters and their impact on the Indian architectural scene. The book tries to trace the footprints of these visionary masters who have stamped and inspired the works of the Indian architects who in turn influenced succeeding generations of professionals. Approximately 56 projects designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret are presented along with almost 40 works of Indian architects which show the influence of their philosophy.

About the authors

Sarbjit Bahga

Sarbjit Bahga and Surinder Bahga are Chandigarh-based architects. They graduated in 1979 and 1984 respectively from the Chandigarh College of Architecture an Institution founded by the Swiss-French architects, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Both are ardent, yet not blind, admirers of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret's philosophy of city planning and architecture. Their association of more than two decades with Chandigarh provided them the opportunity to see the gradual growth of the city and understand the implications of its built-environment for actual habitation. Besides, the interaction of the authors with most of the architects who worked directly with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, enriched their knowledge about Indian works of the Swiss cousins, as also the influence of their thought and work patterns. Apart from their interest in study and research of built-environment, the Bahga brothers are deft designers and keen photographers. Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret : Footprints on the Sands of Indian Architecture is their third book. The other two books authored by them are Modern Architecture in India and New Indian Homes published in 1993 and 1996, respectively. A number of their works have been published in professional journals, exhibited or won awards at national and international levels. Their contribution to architecture, architectural literature and photography has been recognized by various organizations.
