Meena M. Mohite (Author)
Synopsis

In this book, Dr. Mohite has traced the architectural history of Mahakuta group of temples. These temples form a very important segment of Early Chalukyan art and architecture.

The erstwhile Chalukyas were great rulers of Deccan with Badami as their capital. Inspired by the resurgence of the Vedic culture the Chalukyas of Badami undertook the excavations of cave temples as well as construction of structural temples. Aihole, Badami, Pattadakal (World Heritage Site) and Mahakuta were their main centers of construction of activity.

The entire book is devoted to the study of the lesser known center ‘Mahakuta’. Here we find about 22 temples of this ruling dynasty. So far, only two major temples have caught the attention of the historians. This work fills the gap and gives a detailed analysis, chronology and religious background. The impact of Lakulisa cult is also traced. This book explores Mahakuta and its significance in the annals of early Chalukyan art its connection to the hoary past and legends. It will be of use to students of History, lay mans and the tourist.
