Aspects of the Sound System of Gilgiti Shina

Carla F Radloff (Author)
Synopsis

The people who speak the Shina language reside in the mountain regions of the northern part of Pakistan. The Himalaya, Karakorum, and Hindu Kush mountain rangs all converge there, making it an extremely rugged and visually spectaular area.

With mountain on all sodes, the economy that has developed in the area is as rugged as its surroundings. Beyond the wheat and maize crops they harvest each year, the residents of the area experience an abundant yield of a large variety of fruits and nuts, From apricots to apples, peaches to pomegranates, walnuts to almonds, grapes, mulberries and sweet cherries-the adricultural base of the economy still can feed most of the families.

Some export of this bounty is possible to the down-country parts of Pakistan, but much of what the area produces cannot survive the Karakorum Highway-the all-weather road that passes throught the area, linking Pakistan and China.
