Overview for An Inventory of Major Landslides in Sikkim-Darjeeling Himalaya (Geological Survey of India, Special Publication No. 94)

The landslide inventory of Sikkim - Darjeeling Himalaya has been prepared as a dynamic database for future landslide susceptibility/hazard assessment of this area. The graphical part of the database has been prepared on GIS platform using ILWIS 3.3 GIS software and the textural database has been kept in MS Word file. As landslide is a dynamic process this database has been designed in such a way so that the same can be updated/appended in future. The inventory contains information of 164 major landslides within Sikkim and Darjeeling Himalaya of which 32 are rock slides, 33 are debris slide and the rest 99 are heterogeneous slide. Furthermore the correlation of the landslide incidences with the lithology of the area indicates that low grade metamorphites of Daling Group are most susceptible to landslide whereas the gneissic rocks of Central Crystalline Gneissic Complex (CCGC) Group are least susceptible to landslide. This database is based mostly on previous unpublished GSI reports and partly on the field studies carried out up to April, 2006.
