Arun Joshi was born in Jammu. He did most of his schooling in Kashmir. During his college days in Kathua and later at Jammu University, he dabbled in student politics. It was during these days when he got attracted to the charm of written and printed word. Immediately after his post-graduation, he started working with a local newspaper The Kashmir Times. Later, on the desire of his father Chandra Kant Joshi, who died as unsung poet in 1985, he did his doctorate on George Orwell. He rejoined journalism and reported for Indian Express, Times of India, Associated Press and Voice of America. At the peak of militancy, the author took up the assignment of reporting for Hindustan Times from Kashmir in August 1990. His first love remains Kashmir and during his more than a decade’s stay in the Valle as a reporter, he worked on understanding Kashmiri psyche. He is currently the Chief of Bureau (Jammu and Kashmir) Hindustan Times and working on a book on his days as reporter.
