Synopsis Around the World in Eighty Days, a classic novel by the French writer Jules Verne, was first published in 1873.  Set in the early 1800’s, before there were planes or high speed vehicles so that it took a long time to travel, this book is a fascinating adventure story filled with action and romance. The main character in this story is Phileas Fogg, a wealthy Englishman.  He made a bet that he could travel around the world in no more then 80 days.  He risks his entire fortune on this bet and sets out along with his French valet Passepartout to circumnavigate the world within eighty days.  Fogg travels across 4 continents and makes 12 sops around the world.  Throughout his journey he meets many people and gets into many dangerous situations.  This fantastic expedition ends with Fogg winning his bet with only a few minutes to spare.

Jules Verne

JULES VERNE (1828-1905) was a French author whose writing shaped the development of modern science fiction. After studying law he chose to follow his interest in literature. In 1863 Verne published the first of his Voyages extraordinaires - Cinq semaines en balloon (Five Weeks in a Balloon). Verne's novels were immensely popular throughout the world, the most famous being, Around the World in Eighty days.
