Synopsis India possessed knowledge of building stone monuments before the Christian era. Ancient Indians evolved the tripartite classification of rock and formulated guidelines for use of different types of stone for architectural and sculptural works. The vast terrain of India is endowed with good quality building stones that influenced construction of innumerable stone monuments still surviving in different parts of the country. Monuments spread over different parts of India including all those of World Heritage status have been described in this work with respect to their architectural style, construction approach, site condition, foundation, building stones and quarry sites.
