Synopsis India possessed knowledge of building stone monuments before the Christian era. Ancient Indians evolved the tripartite classification of rock and formulated guidelines for use of different types of stone for architectural and sculptural works. About the author

Subinoy Gangopadhyay

Dr. Subinoy Gangopadhyay graduated from Presidency College of Calcutta and received his M. Sc. Degree in Geology with 1st class in 1957 and later Ph.D. degree from Calcutta University. Under an International fellowship he carried out research work in the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and achieved diploma in Geotechnics. He served in the Engineering Geology division of Geological Survey of India till his retirement as the Senior Director of this premier Govt. organization in 1993. He imparted geotechnical advice on various engineering projects of India and also worked as a consultant of several projects of East and North Africa. He has in his credit 52 scientific papers published in national and international journals. During the service period in GSI, he carried out investigation on construction materials of several Indian monuments. After retirement he extended his study to detailed geotechnical evaluation of the monuments as well as prehistoric sites and artifacts of primitive Indians. The present work is the result of such study.
