Synopsis

A student of economics, politics and law, Vasant Sathe initially practised at the Nagpur High Court. He started his active political career as a member of the youth Congress with the Quit India Movement of 1942, spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other great leaders of the time. Deeply influenced by Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Netaji Subas Bose and other starwarts of the freedom movement like Acharya Narendra Dev, Achyut Patwardhan, Jayaprakash Narayan, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Ashok Mehta, Aruna Asaf Ali, S.M. Joshi among others, Sathe threw in his lot with the newly -formed Socialist Party After independence. He remained with it till it split with the exit of Dr. Lohia and Jayaprakash Narayan. Sathe was in the group which, under the leadership of Ashok Mehta came back to the Congress, in 1964. He represented India at the UN General Assembly in 1970. He was elected to Parliament in 1972 and had been its member till 1991. He became the Minister of Information & Broadcasting IN MRS. Indira Gandhi's Government in 1980 and Continued as Minister during Rajiv Gandhi's Tenure Till 1989. He has Successfully held different portfolios like Minister for Chemicals and fertilizers, Communication, Steel, Mines and Coal and Energy. He was the President of the Indian Council for Cultural relations. His published books include: Towards Social Revolution: A case for Economic Democracy; Two Swords in One Scabbard; Restructuring of Public Sector in India; Challenge of Change; and national Government-Agenda for new India. He is now proposing a changer in tax structure to achieve economic independence, through his book Tax without Tears.

Vasant Sathe

Vasant Sathe has been a visionary of the cosmic drama from his childhood. His hobby has been to observe the ever expanding universe with its millions of stars, galaxies, supernovas and black holes, stretching millions of light years. This perspective, has given Vasant a rational outlook, where he believes that a personalized God or Gods are a creation of the human mind and there is no possibility of such a creator. He believes that human beings should only believe in goodness to conduct themselves in life. A lawyer and advocate, he has practised at the High Court and the Supreme Court. He has been an active trade union leader and has held several ministerial portfolios in the cabinets of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Mr Sathe has used his experience in Parliament and as a minister in the Union Cabinet to write eight books, dealing mainly with India's Problems of development. This book is a compilation of Vasant Sathe's writings during the course of all the years he has been a public figure. It consists of four chapters, viz. Universal Vision, Political Stability, Economic Self-Reliance and Social Reforms. He has dedicated this book to the leaders of the younger generation, in the hope that they may find some of his ideas useful.
