Geology and Mineral Resources of Chhattisgarh: Geological Survey of India, Miscellaneous Publication No. 30, Part XXI

N / A (Author)
Synopsis State of Chhattisgrah, carved out of Madhya Pradesh in the year 2000, constitutes one of the most important geological terrains of the Indian Shield, exposing rock sequence from Archaean to Recent over an area of 1,35,084 sq.km. and is endowed with rich mineral wealth, particularly iron ore, coal, limestone and recently discovered diamond-bring kimberlite pipe rocks. It is a sole tin producing state in India.

Geological Survey of India, the pioneer and premier organization of Earth Science studies, is built upon the edifice of the history of development of the geological sciences and mineral exploration in the country since its inception in 1851. Immense, incaluable data generated by GSI in the last 155 years, on geological investigations such as geological mapping, mineral exploration, studies on seismo-tectonics, geo-engineering, geo-environment and geo-oceanography etc. has culminated in the enrichment of geological literature by way of publication of monographys, memoirs etc. on mineral exploration, evaluation and development and unpublished reports on various themes. In sequel to the decision of 1974 in bringing out a miscellaneous publication, volume 30, on Geology and Mineral resources of individual states of India, the first edition on Madhya Pradesh’ (undivided) was published in 1976.

Since 1976, significant additional data on the geology and mineral exploration have been generated based on the modern conceptual models especially on "Plate Tectonics", warranting revision in the tectono-stratigraphy of various mobile fold belts and sedimentary basins present in the State. More rapid and analytical data of geochemical samples have been generated by precision oriented methodology in the modernized laboratories recently set up in the department. Moreover, new mineral deposits and target areas for mineral exploration have been also identified such as diamond-bearing kimberlitic pipe rocks in Raipur District, copper, tin and iron ore in Bastar District, gold in Raigarh, Bastar and Raipur districts. Therefore, the cherished desire of bringing out the second revised edition of Miscellaneous Publication, volume 30, part XXI, entitled as "Geology and Mineral Resources of Chhattisgarh" has bveen fulfilled into present volume which has also a Geological and Mineral Map (1:2M Scale) of the state.
