Overview for Geologic Settings and Petroleum Systems of India's East Coast Offshore Basins: Concepts and Applications

Petroleum exploration frontiers are progressively extending to more challenging areas as the demand for petroleum resources is increasing. Attention has turned from relatively easily accessible onshore regions to continental shelves and during the past five years there has been a marked shift beyond continental shelves to deep-water basins. With the state-of-the-art seismic data acquisition-processing-interpretation, it is becoming certain that further exploration potential exists in deepwater depositional complexes. Deep-water depositional systems are the one type of reservoir system that cannot be easily reached, observed and studied in the modern environment; the study of deep-water systems requires many remote observations, each of which can provide only one view of the entire depositional system. An attempt has been made in this book to integrate multiple data types by combining various facets of geology, geophysics and petrophysics. For bringing in clarity and flow, the contents of the book are organized into three sections. Section I deals with Indian sedimentary basins, their evolution, categorization and exploration play types. Section II deals with the deep-water depositional processes and their interpretation integrating above mentioned data sets particularly in Krishna-Godavari deep-water basin. Section III highlights a few important techniques used in characterizing deep-water reservoirs and in minimizing deep-water drilling hazards. The book is the first of its kind for Indian offshore sedimentary basins with the objective to provide a background and guide for future exploration and development.
