Synopsis The three chapters on Indian art selected for this book were originally published by Sri Aurobindo in his monthly review Arya, where they appeared in 1920 as part of a series entitled A Defence of Indian Culture. Together with a fourth chapter on painting which is not included here, they were reprinted in 1947 in the booklet The Significance of Indian Art. After Sri Aurobindo's passing, the whole of A Defence of Indian Culture and some related essays from the Arya were published under the title The Foundations of Indian Culture. The present book contains the full text of Sri Aurobindo's three chapters on Indian Art, published in The Foundations of Indian Culture (volume 14 of the birth centenary edition 1972, Pondicherry). They are followed by excerpts from this text, printed on a grey background and illustrated with photographs. Relevant quotations from other writings of Sri Aurobindo, mainly from volume 17, are added here and there.
