The Alupas: Coinage and History
Synopsis
The monograph studies the history and coinage of the Alupa kings, a powerful dynastic family that ruled over the minor kings in the coastal region of Tulunadu, Karnataka from about the beginning of the Common Era (CE) till the mid-fifteenth century. It brings to light over one hundred unpublished varieties of coins of the dynasty, some unique. Locating Alupa coins from various sources and studying and interpreting text of inscriptions, it assigns coins to particular rulers on the basis of palaeography and iconography. It documents their political history, administration under them, and their art and culture. With photographs of the coins, it makes their detailed study covering their script, religious symbols, coin weights, comparing their coins with those of other Southern Indian and Deccan rulers. The extensive catalogue at the end presents the illustrations on the two sides of each coin along with an account that refers to its description, date, weight and provenance.
