The early historians mostly European of the nineteenth century were interested only in writing political history. They were fascinated by the victories of the East India Company and were content with the glamour and drama of political history. It is only very recently that social history is being increasingly studied by the scholars and historians. The present work is an exhaustive, vivid, picturesque and at the same time a critical account of the Hindu society of the most important and largest but neglected province of the British India. The North Western-Province during the first half of the nineteenth century. The work is characterized by a new approach and interpretation of the facts. Almost all the available original and secondary sources have been tapped. It is hoped that the book will enable the readers to look at the social life of the period from a fresh point of view.

P.C. Jain obtained his Master’s degree in economics, History and Political Science from Agra University, and Ph.D. on the History of the Hindu Society in Pre-mutiny nineteenth century. He is a versatile genius and widely-read scholar. He is head of the Department of History in a P.G. College of the Rohilkhand University. Dr. Jain has contributed many articles to reputed journals. He has attended various state and national conferences on social sciences. He is widely travelled and has minutely studied the life and manners of the people of different places from a sociological as well as historical point of view. At present he is engaged in rewriting the regional and social history of the present state of Uttar Pradesh.
