This facsimile reprint is my humble and loving tribute to my illustrious fathers, firstly, to mark the centenary of my father, and secondly, to mark my own arrival to the age of sixty, in this year of 2007.  I have always been very fond of my historian great grandfather.  This very book, and his other famous book, History of the Tamils, moulded much of my own historical thinking and love for my motherland, Tamil Nadu and India.  P.T. Srinivasa Iyengar was my father's icon and these two men were mine in my formative years.  It gives me great joy to reprint this book, with the wish that it becomes available to students of Indian history once again.  A bibliography of P.T. Srinivasa Iyerngar is appended at the end of this book, based on the materials available in the British Library, and I would be grateful to any reader who can suggest additions to this bibliography.
