“The Joys of Death” is a decidedly paradoxical title for any book, unless the author is seeking to be deliberately controversial or to provoke thought. Anyone familiar with the author of this publication will know that Dr. Lake Singh is a pacifist who avoids controversy. To say that the book provokes thought is more likely to be in accord with Dr. Singh’s motivation. Last Sunday evening at the Yorkwoods Library, Lake Singh launched “The Joys of Death”, a 246-page labour of love which is the culmination of years of incessant work and focused contemplation. “The Joys of Death” transverses the nonmaterial domain and is undoubtly the crowning glory of the author who has worked tirelessly and achieved much in his life. This book is the outcome of Singh’s preoccupation with things esoteric; the product of his upbringing, his education and inner thoughts. The author admits in his acknowledgements that the idea of writing this book emanated from his association with Swami Vijoyanandaji Maharaj of Bharat Sevashram Sangha whose “ebullient and effervescent lectures on this very subject matter my mind was set to explore...” The book walks a very tight rope attempting to find a synthesis between science and religion from which to draw its conclusion that death is not a thing to be abhorred or feared. The book received instantaneous support at its launching from Dr. Ramesh Seegobin who testified that after four years of medical school, four years of residency and five years of practice as a doctor, he finds “science does not have all the answers” which are in fact “staring us in the face when we look back in our own scriptures”. Dr. Seegobin stated that both science and religion are combined in this book to give us “the prescription to conquer the fears of death”.
