M. Lalitha

Dr. Muthuswamy Lalitha belongs to an illustrious family of musicians. She learnt music from her beloved grandfather and guru Shri V. Lakshminarayana from a very early age. She was also trained in music under her mother Smt. Subhalakshmi Muthuswamy and was inspired by her uncles the legendary violin maestros L. Vaidyanathan, Dr. L. Subramaniam and Dr. L. Shankar. Dr. M. Lalitha along with her sister M. Nandini, popularly known as the Violin Duo sisters, have been widely acclaimed as outstanding South Indian Classical Violinists of the preset generation. Both of them have been awarded several prizes and titles in recognition of their talent and dedication: The ‘Gold Medal’ awarded by His Holiness Shri shankaracharya Swamigal of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam; the prestigious title of ‘Kalaimamani’ which is the Highest Honour in Music and Performing Arts conferred by the State Government of Tamil Nadu and the coveted title of ‘Bharatha Violin Vadhya Thilakangal’ by His Holiness Sadguru Srimad Shantananda Swamigal in Chennai. Dr. M. Lalitha (and Nandini) and released many cassettes and CDs through well-known labels. The versatile Violin Sisters are also Music Directors having done the Music Direction for ‘Kaaicha Maram’, a short film directed by the famous Actress cum Director Mrs. Suhasini Maniratnam produced by the famous Madras Talkies.
