Synopsis

Gleanings in Plant Sciences is a commemoration volume presented to Prof. Bir Bahadur on his completion of 60 years of age. It contains contributions from various research institutions and Universities of India and abroad, who include his friends, well wishers and students. The book includes 34 research and review articles on various aspects of Plant Sciences written by leading experts. The opening articles is on handedness by Robert Ornduff. It is followed by Lamiaceae in India by Sampath Kumar and Murthy. The next article is on Floristic Analysis of Flora of Andhra Pradesh by Pullaiah et al. Raju has given an account of the Mint Genus Leonotis while Kamala has given details of Sesamum, Diseases, and Pests Management. Crystalliferous Inclusions in Boraginaceae is given by Hanumantha Rao and Vijaya Kumar and Trichomes and Emergences in Insectivorous Plants by Hemanth et al. LM and SEM Studies on Seeds of Datura and Brugmansia is the next article by Venkateshwarlu. It is followed by Xylotomy of Indian Clerodendrums by Padma Rao and Ramachandra Reddy. Ramanujam et al. has given details of Pollen of Fossils referable to Sonneratia. It is followed by an article on Melittopalynology by Mate et al. Other articles include Pollen Gametophyte by Nair, Biosystematic Studies in Pennisetum by J.S.R. Murthy et al., Aneuploids of Petunia by Padmaja and China Pullaiah, Cytological and Taxonomic Evaluation of Some Cyperaceae by Rath et al., Genetic Variation in Castor by Janaki Ramaiah and Compatibility Studies in Capsicum by Lakshmi and Srikanth. There is an article on Vam Fungi by Rama Rao et al. several articles are there in the book on Biotechnological aspects, these include Application of Biotechnology to Musa by Leela Sahijram, Oil Seed Crops by Vaidyanath and Rajender Rao, Grain Legumes by Srinivas and Digamber Rao, Chickpea by Jaganmohan Reddy and Vani Devo, Mulberry by Jagadishchandra et al., Pigeonpea by Bhalla et al., Sugarcane by Naik, Vascular Cambium by Krishnamurthy and Kannan, Zygotes and 2-celled Proembryos by Lakshmi et al. About the authors

T Pullaiah

Prof. T Pullah obtained his M.Sc. (1971) and Ph.D. degrees in Botany from Andhra University.  He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia, during 1976-1978.  He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanic Gardens in about 16 countries.  He joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993.  He held several positions in the University as Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Head, Department of Botany; Chairman, Board of Studies in Botany; Head, Department of Sericulture; Co-ordinator and Chairman, Board of Studies in Biotechnology; Principal, S K University College and Warden, S K, University Hostels.  He has published 43 books, 238 research papers and 35 popular articles in Journals of repute.  He is the Principal – Investigator of 20 major Research Projects totaling more than a Crore of Rupees funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, UGC, BSI, WWF, GCC, BARC etc.  Under his guidance, 45 students obtained their Ph.D. degrees and 34 students their M.Phil. degrees.  He is the recipient of Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Prof. P Maheshwari Gold Medal of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxanomy.  He served as the Vice President of the Indian Botanical Society and presently the Councilor of the same.  He served as a member of Species Survival commission of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

G.P. Rao

Dr. Goving P. Rao is working as Head and Senior Scientific Officer at Sugarcane Research Station, Gorakhpur, India. He is the Editor-in-chief of 'Sugar Tech', an international journal of sugar crops and has published 8 books and 6 text books. He has beeninvolved in research an sugarcane pathology for the last 15 years. Dr. Rao is currently working on the diagnosis, characterization and management of fungal, bacterial, viral and phytoplasma diseases of sugarcane in India.
