Synopsis
The earliest attempt to elucidate the microscopic nature of Gondwana and Tertiary coals of India was made in 1926, in thin sections, prepared abroad. Terminology and nomenclature of the micro-constituents of coal was not attempted. Another effort was made in 1932, to the study of coals of the country, in Germany. In 1955, botanical and morpho-petrological nature of the various macerals, composing the Gondwana and Tertiary coals studied mainly in thin sections, came to be known, in detail. Since then, rapid and continuous attention has been directed on almost all coals of the country.
