Synopsis The earliest attempt to elucidate the microscopic nature of Gondwana and Tertiary coals of India was made in 1926, in thin sections, prepared abroad. Terminology and nomenclature of the micro-constituents of coal was not attempted. Another effort was made in 1932, to the study of coals of the country, in Germany. In 1955, botanical and morpho-petrological nature of the various macerals, composing the Gondwana and Tertiary coals studied mainly in thin sections, came to be known, in detail. Since then, rapid and continuous attention has been directed on almost all coals of the country.

H.S. Pareek

Harihar Sharan Pareek (Born: 15.10.1929) was educated at the Banaras Hindu University. He joined the Geological Survey of India in 1955 and carried out work in Groundwater, Engineering Geology, and Coal exploration. In the Petrology Division, he set up a Coal Petrology Laboratory at Calcutta in 1958. he worked on the coals of almost all the coalfields of India and trained several geologists in the subject. Besides coal petrology, his contributions are on Malani, Panjal, Mandi and Darla Volcanics; phosphorites of U.P. and H.P.; and geology of north-western Rajasthan. HE superannuated in 1987 as Senior Deputy Director-General, in-charge of Northern Region, Lucknow. He was on the Editorial Board of International Journal of Coal Geology and is a Full Member of the International Committee for Coal Petrology. He donated his entire savings to the B.H.U. His collection of set of reprints, slides and sections from “H.S. Pareek Collection” in U.S.A., U.S.S.R. and Australia. His set of GSI publications are gifted to the Goa University. The Aligarh Muslim University awards two Gold Medals, every year, in his name, to the first position holders in M.Sc. (Applied Geology), and B.Sc. (Hons.) Geology. The Geological Society of India awards a prize in his name for the best paper published in coal sciences yearly in the Journal. He was Sectional Chairman of International Geological Congress, Moscow.
