Overview for Social Work: An Integrated Approach
Professional social work education was initiated in India through influence of American professional social work, which resulted in a clinical orientation in social work in India. Social work education developed with the influence of government of India schemes, which resulted in welfare orientation in social work in addition to the clinical one. Need for a developmental orientation leading to systems change was identified as more appropriate for developing nations. Several developmental initiatives started in social work practice and education, when action groups, social movements and institutions of development studies started emerging in the country. Today, social work practice and education are significantly developmental. The author of the book, "Social Work : An Integrated Approach" discusses about the growth of professional social work focussed on facilitation of empowerment and change which is based on an inter-related system of values, theory and practice that involves the conscious application of values, philosophy, principles, methods and skills in social work practice. This book covers the aspects like political ideologies, government policies, communityâ€™s changing needs and management needs, economic changes and movements that do influence social work practice.

Sanjay Bhattacharya obtained his Master's degree in Social Work from Indore School of Social Work, Indore and thereafter joined the Bhopal School of Social Sciences, Bhopal as a Faculty. He also obtained M.Phil in Sociology and Postgraduate Diplomas in Labour Law and IR, and Human Resource Development from the Barkatullah University, Bhopal. He did his Ph.D in the area of Training and Development from the faculty of Social Sciences, Barkutullah University, Bhopal. He is the visiting faculty to various professional institutions and also a resource person to various development programmes of government as well as NGO. Besides contributing research papers to various renowned journals, he has also written books in areas of Organizational Management, Social Work Profession, Social Administration, Human Resource Development, etc. He is presently working for World Vision-an international relief and developmental organization.
