Indira Goswami (Mamoni Raisom Goswami) & Her Fictional World: The Search for the Sea

Kaikous Burjor Satarawala (Compiler)
Synopsis The book INDIRA GOSWAMI (Mamoni Raisom Goswami) & Her Fictional World—The Search for the Sea contains some articles on Indira Goswami’s writings by some well-known scholars; six selected short stories of Indira Goswami; excerpts from her novels Tej Aru Dhulire Dhusarita Prishta (Pages Stained with blood and dust) and Adha Lekha Dastavez (An Unfinished Autobiography), Chenabar Shrota (The Course of Chennab), Chinnamastar Manuh (A Man from Chinnamasta) and a complete novel The Moth-Eaten Howdah of the Tusker translated from Assamese by the author herself. At a young age, after just one year of a blissful married life Indira Goswami lost her husband in a jeep accident in Kashmir where he was constructing an aqueduct. It was the end of world for her. Haunted by persistent thoughts of suicide, she buried herself in her lonely cell in a residential school in Goalpara. She found solace in reading letters, diaries and personal papers of her father, whose death was the first traumatic experience of her life. Her consuming preoccupation with the memories of her early childhood found creative expression in her novels, a power affirmation of her spirit’s triumph over suffering. In her novels, Indira Goswami has extended her sympathy to tribals, labourers and other oppressed and marginalised sections of society. She has observed at close quarters the systematic, institutionalised and cruel oppression of women who have lost their husbands and consequently their appointed place in their family and community. As an artist she brings into sharp focus the horror of their lives. The publishers feel immensely proud to publish this collection with the view that non-Assamese readers will also get Acquainted with the works of this great Assamese writer.
