Synopsis There is no dearth of books on the economy of colonial period. But there is a lacunae in this field, i.e. very few books touch the economic state of India in relation to the peasantry or rather 'ryots' as the Britishers used to name them. The agrarian system, the ryotwari settlement, the Mahalwari settlement, permanent settlement, the revenue collection, the drain of wealth theory, the oppressive revenue administration--all has been touched upon in this book. Moreover, there is a chapter which is of special interest, which relates the rise in crime statistics to the failure of crops during the famine years, or the years of high price of grain. This book not only touches upon the complete economic scenario of the modern period, but also touches the social, and legal aspects too.
