Synopsis

From the 3rd century BC, when Emperor Ashoka erected the famous pillar and stupa at Sanchi, the site has been a favoured spiritual home of Buddhists. Art and archeitecture soared to great heights here, only to then. Disapear after the 12th centuary AD until 'rediscovered' in the 19th century.

Today Sanchi is revered for having the most perfect and well –preserved stupas in the century and has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Buddhist Circuit in Central India explores the archietectual magic and historical significance of Sanchi as well as of the nearby, less well –known but equally ancient sites of Satdhara, Sonari, Andher and Murelkhurd.

The guide covers a range of sites around Sanchi that make for interesting day trips like Udaygiri Caves, Gyaraspur and Udaypur. It is also includes well – researched sections on Bhopal, the gateway to Sanchi, the Shiva temple at Bhojpur and prehistoric cave paintings at Bhimbetka.

With over 125 specially –commissioned photographs, illustrations and maps, and an up –to –date Practical Information section, this is a perfect comapnion for not just the intrepid tourist but also the armchair traveller.
