In this book Telecommunications an attempt has been made to highlight some aspects of the telecommunications sector in India in 50 years after achieving independence. A birdâ€™s eye view regarding the growth of telecommunications in India has been presented. A review of the steps initiated by the Government of India in the 90s in the wake of general economic reforms has also been attempted. One chapter on the possibilities of India emerging as a superpower in information technology has been included. An outline of the research undertaken so far in the telecommunication sector has been given in one of the chapters. A full-fledged chapter on the Concept of a Level Playing Filed has been included keeping in view the important role of the regulator in ensuring a level playing field for all the entrants. The methods adopted for financing the telecommunications sector in various countries have been covered in the chapter on Creative Financing-The Asian Models. This book is intended to educate the ordinary reader about the telecommunications sector in India.

A.V. Gokak is an officer of the Indian Administrative Service (Maharashtra-1964 batch). He has held variuos positions at senior levels in the Government of Maharashtra and the Government of India. He served as Secretary, Department of Programme Implementation, Government of India before he took over as Secretary, Department of Telecommunications in Novemer, 1996. At present he is serving as Secretary in the Department of Fertilizers, Government of India. He has also held the post of Managing Director, Food Corporation of India and the Development Commissioner for Cement Industry. Shri Gokak holds a Postgraduate Degree in Economics and has dealt with the telecommunications sector during his tenure in the Department of Telecommunications.
